LEAPS Model

The LEAPS model is effective framework for conflict resolution, de-escalation, and communication, providing police officers with a structured approach to managing potentially tense interactions. By using these steps, officers can improve their ability to diffuse situations calmly and professionally, promoting positive outcomes for both the officer and the individual involved Step 1: Listen

The first step in the LEAPS model is to listen actively. This involves giving the individual your full attention, allowing them to express their thoughts, and not interrupting. Listening is crucial as it helps build rapport, shows respect, and provides essential information on the person’s mindset or situation.

Step 2: Empathise

Once you’ve listened to the individual, it’s important to empathise with their position. This doesn’t mean agreeing with them but acknowledging their feelings and emotions. Empathy helps in building trust and can lead to more cooperative behaviour. It involves using verbal and non-verbal cues to show understanding.

Step 3: Ask

Asking open-ended questions is a key part of the process. This invites the individual to explain their situation or actions further, which can help uncover underlying issues or motivations. It also shifts the focus from confrontation to a dialogue, which is more productive in resolving conflicts.

Step 4: Paraphrase

Paraphrasing involves repeating back what the individual has said, in your own words, to ensure you’ve understood correctly. This reinforces that you are listening and helps clarify any misunderstandings before moving forward in the conversation.

Step 5: Summarise

Finally, summarising allows you to bring closure to the exchange and ensure everyone is on the same page. This step involves highlighting key points discussed and confirming any agreements or next steps, giving both parties a clear understanding of what will happen next.
